This might be the first weekend in fifty or so years on which I did not spend at least time with friends, real friends as opposed to virtual friends. Like so many things this is just a huge surprise. I am probably a bit thicker than many so it is taking longer to sink in but the world as we knew it might well be gone.
The government seems to want to break it to us gently but with every briefing or official pronouncement it seems as if the schedule is being extended. Lots of cheery notes about flattening curves etc but also a stretching of the timeline. I think the challenge will be truly absorbing what this all means. We will of course adapt but it is far from clear what it will all look like.
I remember quarantine when I was a kid. Someone would get measles or mumps or chicken pocks and the family would be in lock down for awhile. We didn't have cell phones or the internet but we survived pretty much the way many are now. Games of Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders etc. Jigsaw puzzles were also popular. The difference is we knew it was a finite isolation and that the world outside was carrying on as usual.
Not so much now.
